Good news for the academic community of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang! We, the Information Technology and Database Center (PTIPD), have improved our campus Wi-Fi network service by implementing the .1X (Dot One X) protocol.
The transition from the hotspot system (UIN-WiFi) to .1X (UIN.1X) signifies UIN Malang's commitment to providing safer and more reliable internet access for the entire academic community.
What is the .1X Protocol?
The .1X protocol, or IEEE 802.1X, is a security standard designed specifically for Wi-Fi networks. It uses port-based authentication to verify the identity of users and devices before they are allowed to join the network.
Advantages of the UIN.1X Protocol Compared to Hotspot (UIN-WiFi):
- Stronger Security: The UIN.1X protocol offers significantly stronger security than traditional hotspots. This is because UIN.1X uses two-factor authentication, meaning users must enter a username, password, and other credentials to access the network.
- Prevent Unauthorized Access: The UIN.1X protocol can help prevent unauthorized access to Wi-Fi networks, thereby protecting sensitive data and information belonging to universities and their users.
- Higher Speed: The UIN.1X protocol has a speed of up to 20Mbps, while UIN-Wifi (Hotspot) can only provide a speed of 5Mbps.
- Ease of Connectivity: The UIN.1X protocol allows users to stay connected when moving buildings or campuses without having to re-login, unlike UIN-WiFi which requires re-login when moving locations.
- Unlimited Access: Just log in once with UIN.1X and then you won't need to log in again. UIN-WiFi is limited to 8 hours per login session.
How to Access Wi-Fi Networks with UIN.1X Protocol
Some devices may require different steps to connect to the UIN.1X network, connectivity guides can be found at the following link. UIN.1X Guide
FAQ
Q: Do I need to configure my device to access Wi-Fi networks with the UIN.1X protocol?
A: Yes, you need to configure your device to use the .1X protocol. Configuration instructions can be found here
Â
Q: Will the UIN.1X protocol slow down my internet connection?
A: No, the UIN.1X protocol will not slow down your internet connection. In fact, the UIN.1X protocol can help increase network speed and reduce potential bottlenecks.
Â
Q: What access is used to connect to the UIN.1X network?
A: To connect to the UIN.1X network, you need the username and password that you use to log in to Siakad.
Â
Q: What if I forget my UIN password?
A: You can reset your password (Siakad) through the Academic section (Rectorate Building, 3rd floor).
