Malang – As a strategic step in maintaining the security of the campus' digital infrastructure, the Information Technology and Database Center (PTIPD) of UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang is revitalizing its network security system by updating its firewall devices in November 2024. This step was taken in response to increasing cyber threats, particularly the infiltration of online gambling advertisements and illegal content on the institution's website.
The phenomenon of online gambling advertisements infiltrating educational and government institution websites is a serious threat in Indonesia. Not only does this damage the institution's image, but it also indicates a security gap that needs to be addressed immediately. UIN Malang took swift action by replacing its old firewall with the latest generation, equipped with SSL Decryption and Advanced Content Filtering.
The flagship feature of this next-generation firewall is its ability to decrypt HTTPS traffic (SSL Decryptor), a technology that allows the system to read the contents of encrypted connections without compromising user privacy. This allows the firewall to detect and block illegal content such as online gambling ads, pornography, or phishing sites that attempt to penetrate the encryption gaps.
“"These gambling ad attacks are no longer just about posting links, but exploiting gaps in static content files that are difficult for conventional firewalls to read. With the new tools, we can filter content down to the encryption," explained a member of the PTIPD network security team.
In addition to the decryption feature, this latest firewall also includes an artificial intelligence-based protection system capable of real-time attack pattern recognition. This technology enables the firewall to detect suspicious activity before it escalates into a larger attack.
Equally important, this device is designed with higher computing capabilities, so the filtering process doesn't disrupt campus internet speeds. This ensures the service remains responsive and comfortable for lecturers, students, and campus guests.
This firewall system revitalization is part of UIN Maliki Malang's major step in strengthening the foundation of a secure and reliable Smart Campus. As reported by various national media outlets, the hacking of government agency websites, infiltrated with gambling content, is a significant wake-up call for all educational institutions in Indonesia to be more vigilant against increasingly complex cyberattacks.
According to a report by the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), there were over 400 million cyberattacks in the education and government sectors throughout 2023. Many of these exploited encrypted connections to hide malware or illegal content.
With this firewall system update, UIN Malang is not only closing existing security gaps but also preparing the system to face future cybersecurity challenges. PTIPD's long-term plan includes integrating network security systems with real-time monitoring and ongoing training for system administrators to ensure they remain prepared for increasingly sophisticated attacks.
“"We want to ensure that all digital campus activities are conducted in a safe and secure environment, and do not harm the institution's reputation," concluded the Head of PTIPD.
